Total Solar Eclipse in Spain: 12 August 2026
Spain is about to watch the day change its mind.
On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, the Moon's central shadow enters the Iberian Peninsula from the Atlantic and travels west to east. This is the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in more than a century—but it will not be total everywhere in Spain.
Where is the path of totality?
Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional places much of the northern half of mainland Spain and parts of the Balearic Islands inside the path, including a route from A Coruña toward Palma through areas around León, Bilbao, Zaragoza and València. Much of southern Spain sees a deep partial eclipse. Check the exact municipality; a 99% partial eclipse is not totality.
Example official timings
- A Coruña: partial begins about 19:31, maximum 20:28, ends 21:22; about 76 seconds of totality with the Sun 12° high.
- Burgos: begins about 19:33, maximum 20:29; about 104 seconds of totality with the Sun 8° high.
- Palma: begins about 19:38 and reaches maximum around 20:32 with the Sun only about 2° high.
Times vary by location. The worldwide eclipse process lasts 264 minutes; that is not the duration at one Spanish site.
Your western horizon matters
This is a sunset eclipse. Scout an unobstructed western view at the same time of evening. A hill, building or tree line can hide the most important minutes. Arrive early, expect crowded roads, and bring water, sun protection and a plan for leaving after dark.
When do glasses stay on?
Throughout every partial phase. Only observers inside the verified totality path may remove them, and only while the Sun's bright face is completely covered. Replace them immediately when bright sunlight returns. In partial locations there is no glasses-off phase. Review safe use.
