How to Use Solar Eclipse Glasses

The spectacle is cosmic. The routine should be simple: check, cover, look, turn away, remove. Practise it before eclipse day, especially with children.

1. Inspect every pair

Check both sides of the filter. Do not use glasses that are scratched, punctured, torn, creased through the viewing area or separating from the frame. Check the printed model and instructions. Tember models C2026, B2026, G2026, P2026 and Y2026 are listed on certificate CE-PC-260615-499-01-9A; see Compliance.

2. Put them on before facing the Sun

Stand still and look down or away. Fit the eclipse glasses securely, then turn toward the Sun. If you wear prescription glasses, keep them on and place the solar viewer over them or hold it securely in front.

3. Keep protection on during partial and annular phases

A Sun that is 99% covered is still a partial eclipse. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough. During an annular eclipse, the bright ring remains direct sunlight, so glasses stay on throughout.

4. Understand totality

Only observers inside the confirmed path of totality may remove glasses, and only while the Moon completely covers the Sun's bright face. Replace them immediately when any bright point returns. If your location is partial or you are unsure, keep them on. Check our Spain 2026 guide.

5. Turn away before removing them

After viewing, turn your face away from the Sun. Only then remove the glasses.

Children, phones and optical equipment

Children need close adult supervision. For a brief, non-magnified phone shot, an undamaged filter may fully and securely cover the active phone-camera lens before pointing it at the Sun; protect eyes separately. Never use this method with DSLR or mirrorless cameras, telescopes, binoculars, optical zoom lenses or attachments. Magnifying optics require a purpose-built solar filter fixed to the front.

After use

Store glasses flat, dry and protected from heat, pressure and sharp objects. Inspect them again before every use. Follow the supplied IFU and its two-year guidance.
